Sjogren's Myths Busted: Separating Fact from Fiction

A female doctor gestures with her thumb down, indicating disapproval, possibly in relation to Sjƶgren's syndrome.

If you've spent any time researching Sjogren's disease online or talking to others about it, you've probably encountered some pretty cringeworthy myths. These misconceptions can be not only frustrating but also harmful, leading to delayed diagnoses, inadequate treatment, and a whole lot of unnecessary suffering.

As a physician and someone who lives with Sjogren's, I'm passionate about setting the record straight. So, let's roll up our sleeves and debunk some of the most common (and cringe-inducing) myths about this complex condition.

Myth #1: "Sjogren's Only Affects Older Women"

While it's true that Sjogren's is more common in women over 40, it can affect anyone at any age, including men and children. In fact, I was diagnosed in my early 30s! This myth can lead to delayed diagnoses in younger individuals, as their symptoms may be dismissed as something else.

Myth #2: "There's Nothing You Can Do About Sjogren's"

This is absolutely false! While there's no cure for Sjogren's (yet!), there are many things you can do to manage your symptoms, improve your quality of life, and even slow down the progression of the disease.

From lifestyle changes and medications to complementary therapies and cutting-edge research, there are options available to help you thrive with Sjogren's.

Myth #3: "It's Just Dry Eyes and Mouth – It's Not a Big Deal"

This one makes me cringe the most. While dryness is a hallmark symptom of Sjogren's, it's far from the whole story. Sjogren's is a systemic autoimmune disease, meaning it can affect multiple organs and systems throughout the body.

Fatigue, joint pain, digestive issues, neurological problems, and even lung and kidney complications can all be part of the Sjogren's picture. Dismissing it as "just dryness" minimizes the very real challenges that people with Sjogren's face every day.
