Sjogren's Gaslighting: When Your Symptoms Are Dismissed

A woman engages in discussion with a doctor, while another woman listens closely in a healthcare environment.

If you're living with Sjogren's disease, you know the struggle is real. The fatigue that feels like you're wading through quicksand, the sandpaper-dry eyes and mouth, the achy joints... it's a lot to handle. But what's even more frustrating is when you seek help and are met with dismissal or disbelief.

I've been there. As both a physician and a Sjogren's patient, I've experienced the sting of medical gaslighting firsthand. It's that sinking feeling when a doctor brushes off your concerns, tells you it's "just stress," or suggests that your symptoms are all in your head. It's invalidating, demoralizing, and can delay much-needed diagnosis and treatment.

The Silent Epidemic of Medical Gaslighting

Medical gaslighting is a pervasive problem, especially for those with chronic illnesses like Sjogren's. It's not always intentional, but the impact is the same: patients feel unheard, misunderstood, and alone in their suffering.

Here are some of the most common gaslighting phrases I've heard (and even said myself before my diagnosis!):

  • "It's just dry eyes. Use some eye drops."
  • "You're too young to have Sjogren's."
  • "Your labs look normal, so it must be stress."
  • "Maybe it's all in your head."

Sound familiar? If so, please know that you're not alone. And your symptoms are not in your head. Sjogren's is a real, complex condition that deserves to be taken seriously.

The Toll of Gaslighting

The effects of medical gaslighting go beyond just frustration. It can lead to:

  • Delayed diagnosis and treatment
  • Increased anxiety and depression
  • Worsening of Sjogren's symptoms
  • Erosion of trust in the healthcare system

Finding Your Advocate

If you've experienced medical gaslighting, it's important to find a healthcare provider who listens to you, validates your experiences, and is knowledgeable about Sjogren's. Don't be afraid to seek a second opinion or switch doctors if you're not getting the care you need.
