Neurohacking Your Way to Freedom through Movement
===
Kara Wada, MD: Welcome back, everyone. And welcome to our new listeners to the Becoming Immune Confident podcast. It's Dr. Kara here, board certified allergy, immunology, lifestyle medicine doc turned autoimmune patient. And as you know, we have a mix of different types of episodes here on the podcast. Some where I'm teaching, some where we're chatting. And my favorite episodes are when I get to bring on amazing people that I have encountered in my life that I am so excited to share with you and the community. And Dr. Tiffany Tajiri is definitely one of those people.
Introduction to Dr. Tiffany Tajiri and Her Background
---
Kara Wada, MD: She is a board certified clinical psychologist. She's a trauma recovery expert. She's the creator of Freedom Rhythm, E-motion Focused Movement. And she is the reigning Dr. America 2024. As a former professional ballet dancer, she combined her passions for dance and neuroscience to create the first and only emotion focused movement, a comprehensive mind and body protocol to inspire awakened living.
Dr. Tiffany's latest publication by Westbow Press incorporates the use of freedom rhythm and it is entitled, 'Born to Create.' Dr. Tiffany is an Air Force veteran, former Army Clinic Chief, and is the first American woman to publish a faith based combat recovery book entitled, 'Peace After Combat.' She is the CEO and founder of Freedom Rhythm, PLLC, and her non profit organization, Energy in Motion.
But most importantly, she is the mother and the wife to a retired army combat veteran. Her mission is to inspire people to create a life they love by teaching them how to harness the incredible power of their mind. Dr. Tiffany, I'm so excited that we get to record a conversation together to share it with the world.
We have done that one other time on an Instagram live a hot minute ago. So this is well overdue and I'm so, so glad to have you on this morning. And I would love for you to share, you know, a little more about your story.
Dr. Tiffany Tajiri: Well, Kara, thank you so much for having me. The last time we spoke it was fire. We had such a great time. It was a hit. So I appreciate you having me back on your podcast. Thank you so much for what you're doing in the world because you truly are a light. Everything that you talk about really just resonates with so many people. People need this information. You're giving it to them from the bottom of your heart for free. And you're helping educate and elevate the collective conscience of the world. So I am super proud of you, my dear sister
Queen, receive that. You are wonderful. You are amazing.
Embracing All Facets of Who You Are and Pursuing Your Passions
---
Dr. Tiffany Tajiri: Well, a little bit about me. So if you are looking at YouTube, you see I have a very colorful background.
I'm a very colorful, creative-type person.
Yes, I'm actually in the process of reinventing myself to call myself Dr. Tiffany Tutu, the creative psychologist, because I have found so many creative ways to help people neurohack their brains
for the better. And when I say neurohack, what do I mean by that? By pulling us out of that chronic stress program because it's so deleterious for our health. Now, for myself, who am I? What am I doing? I'm a licensed and board certified clinical psychologist, but I've done so many things growing up. I was a musician. I still am a musician, a singer songwriter. I play viola, electric violin. I was in the military. I was in acting, speech and debate, you name it. All those things have finally come together and coalesced into something beautiful.
And so I'm a big proponent of saying you have so many facets to who you are. You are so dynamic, you have so many passions and it's truly your passions that help you shine bright. So don't ignore any of those passions. I remember thinking to myself as a small child, you know, growing up, I want to be a ballet dancer.
I did so much time as a professional ballet dancer, and then it was over and done with. And I thought, really? God, is that it? The reality is, no, it's not it. Keep doing that passion. It may change and transition into a different form, like it did become Freedom Rhythm E-motion Focused Movement, where I use a variety of silks to project our emotions in a beautiful and vibrant way that creates a story that sets us free. So the bottom line is embrace all that is you. Whether you're wearing combat boots and a tiara, it's all good. Embrace the many facets of you.
Kara Wada, MD: Can you share? So we, as a sisterhood a few months ago, all met in Cincinnati to support fellow sister in some charity work she was doing, but we got to play with some of these silks. Can you kind of describe a little bit more about what that is and some of the science behind your work too.
The Science Behind Freedom Rhythm and Using Silks to Project Emotions
---
Dr. Tiffany Tajiri: Absolutely, yes. You know, Dr. Bessel van der Kolk is the author of The
Body Keeps The Score, and he ascertains that the body keeps a score of emotionally painful life experiences. You gotta ask yourself, is that a score you wanna keep? I don't think so. Let's zero the score by neuro hacking our brains. So one of the best neuro hacks that we can do is embrace the spirit of the inner child, okay?
That's when we're playful, that's when we're authentic, right? That's when we're having a good time. That's one of our truest versions of ourselves. And so when we do that, we neuro hack the chronic stress program. Research has shown that when we embrace
the spirit of the inner child, our chromosomes or the telomeres on our chromosomes actually grow longer and there's a direct relationship to our lifespan and longevity.
And so freedom rhythm actually uses silks to project our emotions in a beautiful and vibrant way. So, you know the body keeps a score, right?
Emotion is energy in motion, okay? So we all take in all kinds of energy and motion, oftentimes we take in negative energy and motion, and then we hold on to it. Now, the hallmark trait of post traumatic stress disorder is avoidance.
We don't want to deal with it. So we stuff those negative emotions, whether it's anxiety, whether it's fear, exactly girl, you're the visual right there, you're packing it down, you're packing it down, and that's really bad for your body. You're pushing cortisol, adrenaline, noradrenaline, coursing through your veins when you're doing that.
It's bad for your health altogether. And so the best thing I thought of is how can we get that energy out? Well, so many of us may go to the gym, we may go on a walk or run, but we really don't have an intention behind what we're doing when we're doing it.
Maybe we're just doing it to burn calories or lose weight, whatever the situation may be. Exactly. And so, freedom Rhythm has an intention behind it. So you're going to expel your negative emotions the silk. And you say, why silk? And I'm going to spell it for you. It's S-I-L-K in case you're not understanding or hearing me correctly. Why silk? Because the silk moves very intuitively.
It's like a direct reflection of your energy and motion. So as soon as you create with the movement of the silk, It starts to move in a beautiful way, listening to you almost. It's gorgeous, it's vibrant, it's beautiful, you know? And so when they put that into motion, their energy into motion, and they release that stress with intention, it's playful and it's novel and it's neurohacking that chronic stress program.
And so when we were able to get all the ladies together, we had the same color silks. It was like, I think it had like a pink, an orange, a turquoise, a purple. It was just beautiful. And we had all the ladies just embracing the highest vision, the highest version of themselves. I always say, dance and move in the energy of your future self. What is it that you need to release, let go of, so that you can have freedom. And that's essentially why we call it Freedom Rhythm.
Kara Wada, MD: For anyone who is maybe having trouble imagining what these silks look like, if you maybe Google rhythmic gymnastics, or even, well, we should just send people over to your Instagram because you have so many beautiful videos of these silks in motion. My girls are eight and five and they love, love, love running around dancing with these beautiful pieces of fabric. I mean, that's what it is, long pieces of fabric. And, I've had so much fun too. You know, when we think back to the long history of, you know, humans and animals and we think to what happens with a little bunny that gets scared, after they have this big adrenaline release, they shake. They have this, like, this built in tool to help them release that emotion. We've kind of forgotten that along the way. Yeah.
Dr. Tiffany Tajiri: I love that. Now, when we are in stress, so the average person spends 70% of their life in a state of chronic stress. Now get this family, like chronic stress triggers the same neurochemicals as fear. It's adrenaline or adrenaline cortisol, right? And that's coursing through your veins on a regular basis. And we talked about this the last time, Kara, but the more you have those stress hormones in your body, the more they can downregulate your genetic output. So we really have to find a way where with intention, we release that negative emotional energy. Now, Freedom Rhythm's fun. I've done it with groups of over 500 people. And so when you go into a room and you see all the silks floating in the air, it's this incredible synergy. It's almost like seeing a masterpiece, piece of art. I think it's like the Aurora Borealis exploded in the room. It's really neat.
Kara Wada, MD: Yeah. I mean, the other aspect we touched on too, thinking back to our conversation, is these hormones, these chemical mediators have profound impact on our immune system and how it functions. And some of that, you know, kind of coming a little bit full circles, a lot of that initial research was done on medical students at Ohio State, kind of where I practice now. And looking at the changes in their blood counts over the course of the semester and seeing how those blood counts changed, especially as they were close to exam time or they were having, you know, less sleep, you know, all these different things that were immense stressors on their body.
And over time that sets us up for the formation of chronic inflammation. Sets the setting for autoimmune conditions and other things. And all that to say that we aren't purposely causing ourselves to have these problems. This is just, it's a way that our body is trying to protect itself, but it gets a little bit lost along the way.
Dr. Tiffany Tajiri: Exactly.
Becoming Aware of Subconscious Programs and Changing Deleterious Patterns
---
Dr. Tiffany Tajiri: And if we are in a state of chronic stress, we have to ask ourselves, What are we fearing? Right? What is the anxiety about? Oftentimes we use our powerful, powerful imagination to imagine or visualize worst case scenario in our lives, further producing more of these toxic hormones within our body.
Now, these hormones, I don't like to call them toxic because they're not, I mean, they're meant to help us survive, but are we meant to be in a state of chronic stress or in survival mode for 70% of our lives?
Absolutely not. And you know, one of the problems, Kara, is that we go on autopilot as human beings.
We're creatures of habits. We're very good at going on autopilot. Now, what runs your autopilot is your subconscious mind. So your subconscious mind dictates 95% of your life.
And if you're stuck in the cycle in the same thinking, feeling loop over and over again, trapped, thinking the same thing, feeling the same thing, you're not going to make that progress that you really need. You need to break that vicious cycle, pull yourself out of the subconscious mind and into the conscious awareness so that you're thinking about why you're thinking about why you're thinking. We're the only animal that can do that. Thinking about thinking is actually called metacognition, right? And then figure out how do we put a monkey wrench in this thing called chronic stress? How do we break the cycle?
Kara Wada, MD: And what are some of the first steps that we can take?
Dr. Tiffany Tajiri: Ooh. Well, number one is becoming aware. You got to become aware. Think of yourself and really look at your life as like, imagine you were a researcher, being Inspector Gadget on your own life, right? And start looking at, I always say, dysfunction things that are not serving us always leave like breadcrumb trails. So if we look at those breadcrumb trails of dysfunction, whether it's, you know, whether we have to be vulnerable and ask our significant other or ask somebody who loves us dearly, "What am I doing when you're looking from the outside in? I'm being truly vulnerable with you. What do you see?" And then you become Inspector Gadget alongside them, but you gotta get vulnerable, right? Because vulnerability is birthplace to joy and happiness, but it takes a tremendous amount of courage to really self introspect.
Be conscious about what you're thinking about on a regular basis. What is your motto inside your head? You know, the most oppressive lie programmed to the human mind is, "I am not enough." Okay? And you know that your subconscious mind dictates the majority of your life. And if that's running on a program that's deleterious to your entire existence, you wonder why you're not stepping into your next level or leveling up because that's the program that's running in your subconscious mind. Get curious about what those programs are. Now, usually those programs are embedded between the ages of zero and seven years of age. That's during childhood. We download most of our programs, no pun intended, from our primary caregivers, those who are closest to us. Now you may be blessed and you may have a mom like Kara and she's going to love all over you, give you the affection that you need, teach you about a healthy attachment style, show you what love is, show you how to set healthy boundaries, help you have a good conscience and good discernment. But not all people are blessed to have a mom like you, Kara.
You know, some people come up from dysfunctional homes where the parents tell their children, "You're not enough. You'll never measure up. You know, you're worthless." Those become their programs. So it's so important for us to recognize our programs first and foremost. And then change those programs, whether it's creating a new self mantra for yourself. "I am worthy. I am capable. I am more than enough. I'm a conqueror. I am victorious," right? Saying all those things to yourself. Sometimes you have to say it until eventually you believe it, but you're creating a program. And the only way to create a new program is to get out of the subconscious mind, which we call the default mode network and become consciously aware of what you're doing and what we also call the cognitive control network.
Kara Wada, MD: I think one of the things in practices that has been really instrumental in helping me in particular over the last several years is, one, realizing that one needs to be aware, like just that little, like, and now we all know, right? And then also carving out that time. I call it mandatory me time, but time to sit down and just sometimes just freewrite what are those things that are coming to mind without any filter and just letting that pen continue on the paper. I'm not worrying about punctuation. I'm not worrying about filtering or moderating kind of what those thoughts are, just letting them come out. And doing my best to do that from a place of non judgment that this is just, you know, what my brain is coming up with. And then kind of taking it from there, you know, what are the things that are coming up that are reality. And then what's the story that I'm telling myself to. I think that line that I learned from Brene Brown, but this idea that, so much of what we're influenced by those beliefs, that default network when we bring it to the surface, we can see how we're interpreting things through our own lenses through the subconscious and be able to tease out the truth from the reality from the story.
Dr. Tiffany Tajiri: That's so good what you're saying. So it's really flowing in your journaling and not judging the thoughts that are coming out, but being very mindful, very present and just allowing yourself to go there. It's so hard not to judge ourselves, right? Just to be fully embracing, you know, our authentic version of ourselves, but the truth of how we're feeling, right?
Sometimes we're scared to learn the truth because that means we got to change things. We're human beings and we like to live in congruence. What does that mean? It means that our thoughts, and our emotions, and our behaviors flow in the harmonious way in the same direction. Exactly. But as soon as we become aware of something, and we're recognizing that maybe it's a thought that we have or a relationship that we have, and you're recognizing things that aren't so great about it, and then you continue to be in that relationship, then you are experiencing what we call in psychology, cognitive dissonance. Now, cognitive dissonance causes anxiety.
It's no fun to be in a state of cognitive dissonance where your thoughts and your emotions go in the opposite direction of your behaviors or vice versa. And so when we are honest with ourselves, we are becoming aware of where we might experience cognitive dissonance. And then we got to have the courage to reconcile the dissonance in an honest and truthful way.
It doesn't mean, let's say you're in a relationship that's unhealthy for you.
Okay? And you are journaling and you're recognizing how unhealthy it is for you and then you continue to maintain that relationship and you continue to progress in that relationship and that you're recognizing how bad it is, not only for your mental health, but for your physical health. Going down in a state of incongruence is going to be harmful for you, especially for your psyche. You're going to have a tremendous amount of anxiety. But as soon as you have the courage to say, "This is not adding up." Right?
It takes the courage to say, this is not adding up. I have to be truthful with what I'm seeing and what's happening in my life. And now what do I have to do behaviorally to change the cycle? Because if you're stuck in a cycle, how are you to create anything new in your life? You can't. So you've got to have that freedom and it
comes with courage.
Kara Wada, MD: Yeah. Absolutely. And sometimes that courage is realizing that you need to practice setting boundaries. Sometimes it is letting a relationship run its course, with a friendship or you know, stepping away from those toxic interactions, even with a family member, you know, and realizing that there are so many, I think especially as women, there are so many shoulds that are placed on us. We should do this because that is what's done. There is so much freedom in taking the step back and I love the saying that shoulding all over our lives.
Dr. Tiffany Tajiri: No doubt.
Kara Wada, MD: Letting go of that and then, and really following what is true to your values, I think that's something I take my coaching clients through is, okay, let's identify what are your core values and then how can we help you set up those habits in better alignment with them over time? Because it does, it helps foster this congruence, this, it's getting rid of the hypocrisy within our brains, right?
Dr. Tiffany Tajiri: Yeah, no, I agree.
Listening to Your Intuition and Following Your Spiritual Compass
---
Dr. Tiffany Tajiri: So thoughts, emotions, and behaviors are one thing. They always come in this trifecta, but I also believe firmly that we have the spirit, the mind, and the body. You know, spiritually, in what direction are you going, right? And I always think that your spirituality is the highest part of you. It's the love and light within you. And it's the truth within you that sets you free. And it should always be your compass. And so when your spirit says, "Uh-uh-uh," don't do that.
Kara Wada, MD: Red flags!
Dr. Tiffany Tajiri: Red flag. You have to listen. It's not you being crazy or you being overanalyzing things. We have this spiritual guide within us. You know, we call it our intuition. It doesn't always say why, but it points the way to where we should be going. We need to listen and tune into it. But the more we're used to blotting it out, right, by distracting ourselves or dismissing the problem at hand, the harder it becomes to listen to that little voice inside that really, really knows how to get you out of the toughest situations that can really guide you to your next level in the way that you are meant to be. And I call it your divine design for your divine destiny. That's where you got to go. That's your truest, authentic version of you. And that's what I love about you, Kara.
Let me just say this girl, like you are truly authentic. I love that you're audacious and you have your podcast, you're on social media, you're an influencer, you're doing things that you have this inner light, and it tells you, you need to share this information. People need to hear this. People need to hear that they're not alone. And It can be really, what would be the word? It'd be really scary putting out there like that. Like I mean, so scary. I remember like just doing my first few like little vlogs on Instagram, how scary that was. But you've overcome that fear and now you're becoming this beacon of light for so many people. And sometimes it's scary. And most of the time it is scary going into the unknown. But the bottom line is you cannot fail if you become your authentic Self. You are not going to fail becoming the truest, brightest version of
Kara Wada, MD: Thank you. I also want to circle back, maybe 45 seconds, back to that inner voice. And, you know, I think the reason I want to go back to that, so often what comes up in my conversations with, in particular, within the chronic illness community and in women in particular. From those early ages, those times when that default network and thought process subconscious is ingrained. We are programmed, especially as little girls, to ignore. Ignore that feeling of like not wanting to hug someone or, you know, not wanting to smile or, you know, some of these things that are just in our culture, like people pleasing and it really takes the courage and vulnerability to unlearn so much of this, I think, when we are trying to rediscover that inner voice and that spirit and learn how to listen. And I'm still in the process of learning how to listen because there was from that early age, you know, ignoring that. And I got really good at ignoring all the signals from my body. The tummy aches, the stress or, you know, the tension, clenching in my jaw, you know, some of these ways that it physically shows up in our body. Um, you know, going back to the beginning. And so, yeah, I think just to bring mind that this is journey, that it takes time. It's something that we many times have to unlearn so much of what we're brought up thinking was the way.
Dr. Tiffany Tajiri: Wow. That's so powerful, Kara. I love that. You know, I call that those cultural values and rules, I call them artificial life rules. We internalize them and they become our programs. And we think that we need to run by these programs. And in reality, we are free and we don't recognize how free we are. We become prisoner to these programs that we download and some of the programs we create for ourselves. One of the programs that held me back and down for a while was, I was in the military a while back and you may look at my like, this girl's in the military! look congruent with her. Well, no. I'm not congruent with that. But the bottom line is my military instructor came up to me and he said, "Girl, pick one passion and pursue it because you cannot be great at all things." Now those words held my subconscious mind prisoner for years until I finally realized that all my passions are part of my divine design for my divine destiny, right?
I'm a psychologist, a dancer, author, musician, Air Force veteran, queen, mama, wifey, you name it. I'm those things. And so I think culture has also taught me that a psychologist is very Freudian oriented, right? Think of like the man on a couch smoking a cigar and it's very black and white, very sterile clinical environment. Here we are. Look at where we at now. I'm colorful and creative, right? And so much of life and even in so much medicine, traditional medicine can get very stuck in those programs. So it is helpful and we have built upon it, but you are also a creative, Kara. You have found ways and nuances to step outside the box and look at it from a new dynamic perspective that really fleshes out medicine in a whole new way with a whole new meaning, right? Because we're using our creative mindset and not getting stuck in the box of the program. Now, being in a program is not bad and it's not wrong. Okay? The bottom line is, are you feeling truthful in your program? Are you feeling happy in your program? And if you are, kudos to you, stay there if that's where you want to be, okay? There's no right or wrong answer. It's just, we want you to feel the freedom to be who you are truly and authentically and not ignoring your psychosomatic reactions from your body, which oftentimes shows up in an immunology.
Kara Wada, MD: Yes. Absolutely. I think, one of the things that I think is, you know, really critical, especially within the patient, physician, and I'm sure psychologist patient relationships. When we are in a place where we feel safe, when we're not in that stress response as the provider, we are able to access the full capabilities of our brain, including that part of our brain that is curious, that is creative, that can think outside the box.
And I think, you know, this work is not only important for those of us who are dealing with misbehaving immune systems or other stressors. In that realm, it's just as critical for those of us who are healthcare professionals, who are caretakers, who are being that sounding boarder, that caretaker for other humans so that we can take the best care of ourselves and also of them.
Dr. Tiffany Tajiri: No, that is so sound and I'm going to add to that and say, we cannot be in survival mode and create and design the life of our dreams while in survival mode. Remember, Maslow's hierarchy of needs, right? We have to have all that security before we are free to explore the depths and the incredible depths and the incredible facets of who we are.
And so, if you are in survival mode right now, the most important thing for you is to find a place where you feel safe. And whether you are your own sanctuary for safety, whether you go somewhere, right? I think one of the most important things that we can learn over time is that we got to learn how to color our worlds from the inside out. We have to be the creator of the emotion that we want from the inside out. Oftentimes, Kara, people wait for situations within their environment to color their emotional state. They wait for this perfect moment to allow themselves to feel the sense of accomplishment. When the bottom line is you can conjure that emotion at any point in time, because your mind is that powerful.
Kara Wada, MD: And it really, you create your own future. You, with that, and especially when you are being intentional.
The Power of Imagination and Manifesting Your Future
---
Dr. Tiffany Tajiri: Let's talk about imagination for a second, because it's like that's so important.
Like, when you're thinking about your future, you've got to be able to imagine it, like visualize it and the depth of what you want to experience. And you have to imagine the emotion of what you're feeling. Now, here's some fun research.
Dr. Kelly Cole conducted an unbelievable experiment on imagination. Over several weeks, she had a group of people imagining doing physical exercises, not actually doing them. Now she also had cohorts of people actually doing the exercises in a baseline, okay? But in the end, those individuals who did the exercises, okay, they had 30% muscular strength gain in those areas of the body because they physically did the exercise. But those individuals who imagined doing the exercise had 22% muscular strength gain in those areas of their body. Your imagination activates your brain's motor cortex in the
same way as physical performance.
So you imagining what you want for your future needs to come with two things, okay? And this is what creates your electromagnetic signature, otherwise known as your aura. It comes with your thoughts. Okay? Because those are electrochemical and then it comes with your emotions because it is magnetic and that's why it's called an Electromagnetic signature.
So, electromagnetic signature has two things. Your thoughts and your emotions. That is what makes you shine bright. Literally. It's an aura, okay? And so when you want to make something happen, I like to use the word manifest, don't like to use this and people think it's too new agey, but the bottom line is you create something, okay? So, when you have a clear intention and a dedicated decision of what you want, you have to match that clear intention with what we call a fantastic feeling or an elevated emotion. Okay? So you got to have the thought and you got to have the emotion. Then you got to have the imagination activated in detail. You got to practice it. Where and how do I like to practice it? I like to go on walks or on jogs, right? When I'm running, I'm visualizing, putting on my best jams and I am visualizing. Why is it good when I go on a walk? Because that also engages both hemispheres of my brain using bilateral stimulation. So let me just wrap that up for you. Your imagination is incredibly powerful. In fact, your brain does not know the difference between a real versus an imagined experience. Always have a clear intention or a dedicated decision of what you want to have because that comes from your thinking brain and match it with elevated emotion. Visualize what you want for the future and there you have it. Walk into your destiny.
Kara Wada, MD: High fives. Let's do it.
